South Australia at the 2006 Commonwealth Games

The South Australian representation and success at the 2006 Melbourne Commonwealth Games was again significant and played a key part of Australia's success.

28 athletes from South Australia competed in Melbourne. 23 of these 28 athletes returned home with a total of 29 medals - 16 gold, 9 silver and 4 bronze.

We were well represented in the successful gold medal winning teams - Men's and Women's Basketball teams and in the Men's Hockey. Mark Ormrod again showed his class as part of the winning 4 x 400 metre relay in Athletics.

A pleasing result in the number of outstanding individual and small team medals where our athletes won a total of 21 medals. These included swimmer Sophie Eddington with 2 gold medals in the backstroke events. Individual track results included Brooke Krueger-Billett taking gold in the Hammer; Alwyn Jones - bronze in the Triple Jump and Dmitri Markov silver in the Pole Vault. Chris Rae's gold medal in the 105" super heavy weight in the Weightlifting was magnificent. Pairs events gold medallists included Robert Newbery in the 10 metre Synchronised Diving and Desiree Baynes in Women's Trap Pairs Shooting.

Our elite athletes with a disability were world class. Swimmer Matthew Cowdrey was the only male individual swimmer to win gold. He won two golds in the 50M and 100M in world record times. Track and field athlete Katrina Webb won silver in the 100 metre sprint.

A summary of all the results can be found here (61kb PDF)
