Organisation - Overview

The Office for Recreation and Sport (ORS) is the lead agency for the implementation of the South Australian Government's policy on recreation and sport. The ORS delivers a wide range of programs and services that support our vision for all South Australians to be
‘Active for Life’.

The energies and resources of the ORS are focused through our Strategic Directions Framework (please click on the graphic below for a larger image).

Strategic Directions Framework

Industry work takes place in three key operational divisions:

  1. Industry Development and Participation
  2. Venues, Infrastructure, Planning and Policy
  3. The South Australian Sports Institute

The Industry Development and Participation division works to build strength, capacity and sustainability with industry clients. Through the development of programs and resources, and the provision of funding assistance through Grants programs, this team works to support and enhance the efforts of sport and recreation organisations and clubs. The State Government’s Physical Activity Strategy and its principle physical activity message be active” is managed and implemented here.

The Venues, Infrastructure, Planning and Policy division provides a strategic and integrated approach towards the development and delivery of recreation and sport infrastructure development planning, construction project management, research and policy advice, facilities management, and recreation trails development and management. Major sporting venues such as Hindmarsh Stadium, Adelaide Superdrome and Santos Stadium are managed on behalf of the Minister for Recreation, Sport and Racing.

The South Australian Sports Institute (SASI) supports and develops the pursuit of sporting excellence though the conduct of high performance sport programs, athlete scholarships and support services. SASI supports more than 450 athletes annually across 18 major Olympic and Commonwealth Games sport programs. It also conducts comprehensive talent identification and development programs as well as providing access to high quality training facilities. SASI sports programs and scholarship athletes are also supported with access to world-class sports science, coaching and support services.

Much of the work of the ORS takes place in partnership with other government departments, industry bodies and state sport and recreation associations. There is also a long and mutually beneficial partnership with the Australian Sports Commission.
