Groups - Culturally & Linguistically Diverse
South Australia benefits from a national immigration
program contributing to a multicultural society. However,
while people from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds
participate in mainstream services and programs there is often
a need for specific programs to assist the broader integration
process.
The Office for Recreation and Sport provides support for a number of initiatives to meet the needs of people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, with a strong focus currently on new and emerging communities in South Australia. Examples of such initiatives include:
- Kilburn Indoor Soccer League – A partnership between Indoor Soccer Australia and Lutheran Community Care - League for youth aged 12-18 targeting diverse communities in the Kilburn, Blair Athol and Enfield areas
- Migrant Resource Centre of SA’s Sports Subsidy Program for Youth – Financial support provided to newly arrived young people to assist them to participate in ongoing sport and recreation opportunities
- Basketball Association of SA’s New Arrivals Program – Training, competition and schools development
- Lutheran Community Care’s A Sporting Chance project – a community development approach involving local sporting clubs and newly arrived communities
- Multicultural Communities Council of SA’s Sharing Through Active Recreation Program – partnership with a variety of state and local sporting organisations to increase participation of people from CALD backgrounds
- Adelaide Secondary School of English’s After School Sport Program – Provides students with exposure to a number of different sporting experiences with an emphasis on linking students into ongoing programs
- Thebarton Aquatic Centre’s Women’s Swimming Program – A culturally sensitive learn to swim and recreational program for women from diverse backgrounds
New Arrivals Sport and Recreation Forum
The New Arrivals Sport and Recreation Forum was conducted on 6 December 2005 at the Office for Recreation and Sport Conference room.
Approximately 50 people attended the Forum, representing a variety of organisations including sport and recreation, local government, various state government departments, schools, community support agencies and advocacy groups.
The program consisted of presentations by the Office for Recreation and Sport regarding an overview of funding provided, initiatives to date and current and future direction and presentations from agencies that have been conducting significant projects aimed at meeting the sporting needs of new arrivals. A workshop session was also conducted which examined the barriers to participation and offered suggested strategies to address the barriers.
