| Specific Population
Groups - Overview
The Office for Recreation and Sport is committed
to ensuring that all people, regardless of age, gender, cultural
background and ability have equal access to sport and recreation
opportunities.
The Office employs officers to provide a focus
in the areas of sport and recreation for Indigenous Australians,
people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds,
women and girls, mature age and people with a disability.
These groups have lower participation rates in physical activity,
recreation and sport than both the national and State averages.
Officers work with relevant key partners to
develop strategic directions and programs and are also available
to assist sport and recreation organisations develop targeted
programs. As a result there many programs available to specific
population groups have not only expanded but have begun to
integrate with mainstream recreation and sport organisations.
Pathways are therefore being developed which allow people
from different backgrounds, cultures and abilities to either
enjoy being physically active in a social environment or competing
at local, state, national or even international levels.
These pathways have been possible due to the
willingness of the recreation and sport industry and community
organisations to enter into partnerships, share resources
and trial new ideas and programs.
