Paralympic Games - 6 - 17 September 2008
The Paralympic Games are a multi-sport event for athletes with a physical disability or who are blind/vision impaired. The name derives from the Greek "para" ("beside" or "alongside") and thus refers to a competition held in parallel with the Olympic Games.
The one major difference between the Olympics and the Paralympics is the concept of classifications.
Put simply, the classifications are a way for organisers to group like with like athletes so that people of roughly equivalent disabilities can compete together.
- The Beijing Games will have 472 gold medals on offer and will host around 4000 athletes and 2000 officials.
- Athletes from 170 countries will participate in China.
- There are 18 Paralympic venues this year, 16 in Beijing plus sailing in Qingdao and Equestrian in Hong Kong.
- It will be the second biggest sporting event in the world this year, watched by an estimated TV audience of 1.5 billion people.
Australia could win their 1000th Paralympic medal in Beijing.

Day 10 of the Paralympic Games
The current medal tally for Australia is:
20 Gold
26 Silver
25 Bronze
Matthew Cowdrey again won gold as part of the 4x 100m Medley relay team that defended their title, breaking their own world record by 10.19 seconds.
The Australian Steelers (Wheelchair Rugby) have advanced to the Gold medal match after beating Canada with 7.7 seconds left in overtime. This team consists of South Aussies Steve Porter, Ryan Scott and George Hucks.
