Selection Trials

SASI Volleyball Selection Trials will be undertaken at SASI on Sunday 20th September to select next year’s squad.  Over 9o athletes have nominated to trial for both Beach and Indoor volleyball.  The day will consist of Fitness Testing, looking at skill and technique levels of the athletes and they will also be put through some competitive game situations.

Current Scholarship holders Bath Carey and Kirsten Smith members of the development squad are a part on the Australian Women’s Junior Team, which is competing at the Asian Championships in Taiwan this week.

PROGRAM OVERVIEW

The SASI Volleyball Program is structured as a feeder -underpinning program to service:

1) AIS/VTA Men's Indoor Volleyball Program
2) AVF National Women's Indoor volleyball Program
3) AIS/AVF Beach Volleyball Program (Men & Women)

Coaching SASI team

The SASI Volleyball Program comprises of five broad categories. The 5 categories are known as:

  • SASI Elite Squad
  • SASI Development Squad
  • SASI Talent Search Squad
  • SASI Graduates
  • SASI Associates
Athletes are selected into squads based upon their physiological profile, athlete qualities or performance in the International competition arena. 

SASI Talent Search Squad is an opportunity for physically gifted individuals to be introduced to the sport of Volleyball and "fast-tracked" in the development of basic skills.  The program integrates aspects of both Indoor and Beach Volleyball.  Athletes are sourced from the SASI Talent Search Program and are invited to participate in the squad upon successfully meeting the physical criteria set out by the SASI Volleyball & Talent Search staff (12 - 24 month program)

Year 7 Camp - SASI

The SASI Development Squad (14 - 20 y.o. approx.) is a high performance training program that fast tracks talented athletes towards volleyball excellence and the possibility of representing Australia in the international arena. It integrates the best aspects of both Indoor and Beach Volleyball in order to achieve this goal. The SASI Development Squad feeds into the SASI Elite Squad and National programs of the respective disciplines (Indoor & Beach) and has been shaped to strongly support the AVF High Performance Plan. This squad is coached and case managed by the SASI Development Coach, with support from SASI Senior Coach and SASI Specialist Coaches.

Athletes are selected by SASI Coaching staff (Senior Coach, Development Coach, Specialist Coaches). Athletic profile, attitude and performances at State and National competitions are all taken into consideration. 14 - 20 athletes. Up to 8 hours training per week including Strength & Conditioning. SASI Development Squad Scholarships are awarded annually.

The SASI Elite Squad functions as an integral part of and feeder squad to the Australian Volleyball Federation/Australian Institute of Sport National Beach Volleyball Program. On a daily basis, it assists this AVF/AIS Program achieve its high performance objectives and deliver its Strategic Plan (2005-2009). Elite Squad Scholarship holders train exclusively in Beach Volleyball and are coached and case managed by the SASI Senior Coach and supported by the SASI Development Coach. All Elite (and some Development) athletes compete annually on the Australian Beach Volleyball Tour and the Australian Volleyball League (Indoor). SASI Elite Squad Scholarships are awarded annually.

Athletes train with a goal to represent Australia on the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour. 20 - 30 hours training per week.

AIS / SASI Beach Volleyball Scholarship Holders: SASI Volleyball continues to provide support to AIS/SASI athletes in daily training environment and during National / International competition phases as required. The main competition focus for these athetes is the 2006 FIVB World Tour and onward to the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.

SASI Graduates: Past SASI Scholarship holders who are current AIS Scholarship holders retain their status as SASI Graduates.  

All squads (except Talent Search) have a strong emphasis on Strength & Conditioning. Squads also extensively utilise SASI Sports Science specialists in the areas of Physiology, Performance Analysis, Psychology, Biomechanics and Athlete Career & Education services. Additionally, SASI Volleyball has a dedicated Sports Medical team of highly skilled and experienced Doctors and Physiotherapists.

All eligible Development athletes are required to represent SA at Australian Indoor and Beach National Championships

All athletes are coached and prepared to succeed at an International level of competition.

Generating, sustaining and evolving a positive, dynamic and integrated Big Team culture is central to the Program's success.

NATIONAL TRAINING CENTRE PROGRAM

The SASI Volleyball Program is a partnership program funded and supported by the South Australian government through SASI in partnership with both National and State Sporting Organisation. A key partner in the program is Volleyball Australia who contributes funding support to the program as part of its National High Performance Plan. The NTC endorsement of the program recognises the status of the program in the sports National High Performance Pathway and also the indirect funding contribution to the SASI program by the Australian Sports Commission through Volleyball Australia.

 

ATHLETE PATHWAY

SASI Volleyball is a key program within the Australian Volleyball Federation’s Elite Athlete Development Pathway.

SASI Volleyball Program will seek to achieve the following objectives:

  • To identify and develop male and female athletes with the potential to represent Australia at the International level in Volleyball (Indoor & Beach).
  • To identify and develop male and female athletes with the potential to achieve an international “Top 10” ranking through participation in FIVB World Tour Events (Beach).
  • To identify and develop male and female athletes with the potential to participate in the 2008, 2012 and 2016 Olympic Games and to assist those athletes realise that potential (Indoor & Beach).
  • SASI Talent Search - Athletes drawn from Talent ID testing & invited to attend (INDOOR & BEACH focus). 2 year Program.
