| Officials - Overview
An official is classed as any person who controls
the actual play of a competition by applying the rules and
laws of the sport to make judgements on rule infringement,
performance, time or score. Officials play a key role in ensuring
everyone observes the spirit of the game or event. Officials
help our young athletes develop through sport and make the
game happen.
People become involved in officiating for several
reasons. Many parents associated with junior teams are ‘forced’
into the role because of local rules insisting that all teams
must supply an umpire before that team is allowed to participate.
Others begin their officiating career because the assigned
official hasn’t turned up, while there are others who,
because the rules state the coach is permitted on the ground
to coach, assume dual roles.
Regardless of how officials begin training,
support and encouragement should apply to ensure that the
experience for all umpires is both a rewarding and satisfying
one, as well as one that benefits the game and the players
involved.
The Office for Recreation and Sport through
the State Coaching and Officiating Centre (SCaOC) provides a
range of officiating services to individuals, clubs and associations
throughout South Australia. Below is a list of topics related
